Current Social Media Trends

TRENDS.  We all know how important it is to be up to speed on trends – especially with how fast technology develops.

Well, Mashable is one of my favorite sources to stay on top of the latest and greatest in technology, especially social media.  Recently, they posted an article about the 5 Social Media Trends to watch right now.

Here are the highlights for you:

1.  Location, location, location.  Social sites are adding features which allow you to attach your location information.  Twitter, Foursquare, Gowalla, Google Latitude, Yelp…and even Facebook has intentions of adding this to their mix.

2.  Group Buying.  With this concept, consumers are able to ‘gang up’ and get the best discounts/deals on services and products during a certain time period (given that a certain number of certificates/discounts are sold).  This is GREAT for local businesses to reward loyal customers, while attracting new ones too.  Check out Groupon or LivingSocial (see if your city is listed and sign up!).  (Kansas City also has LuckyMonkey and DealBug.)

3.  Mobile Ads.  Going back to the location trend, advertisers are now able to take advantage of mobile ad platforms that let them reach consumers at critical junctures, such as the moment just before they make an in-store purchase.  Customers can now be reached at the point of sale.

4.  Mobile Payments.  The ability to make and take payments through a mobile phone…wow!  This will be something for businesses to keep an eye on.  Visa and Paypal are actively creating platforms for this concept (PayPal has a payment app for the Android, iPhone, and Blackberry platforms).  Also, Jack Dorsey (one of Twitter’s founders), has developed a dongle that attaches to the iPhones headphone jack, which allows credit card transactions.

5.  Having a Social Media Policy.  As more companies get serious about having a presence on social media sites, they are realizing the need to protect themselves and employees.  The policies can and will range in regards to details/documentation (1 page to several), based on company culture.  Bottom line, most will mention basic principles, such as,  “exercise good judgment” and “be responsible,” in representing to company in social media.
